Reverend Denis G. Hanrahan, 80, died the evening of March 20, 2016. Born on August 9, 1935 in Tulla, County Clare, Ireland, Father Hanrahan knew from an early age that he wanted to be a priest. Father Hanrahan once remarked that he grew up in a parish where the priesthood was a popular vocation among the young men and their dedication inspired him. Ultimately Father Hanrahan followed his brother, Reverend Michael Hanrahan, to the priesthood and to Oklahoma.
Father Hanrahan was one of eight children born to Michael and Delia Frances Moloney Hanrahan. He attended Tulla Boys School, Saint Flannan's College and All Hallows College, Dublin where he was ordained on June 14, 1959 for the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
Father Hanrahan's assignments have included serving as associate pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Lawton; Sacred Heart Church, Oklahoma City, and Saint Pius X Church, Tulsa. He served as pastor of Saint Helen Church, Frederick and mission; Saint Eugene Church, Weatherford and missions; Saint Rose of Lima Church, Watonga and missions; Saint Catherine Church, Pauls Valley and mission and Saint Mary Church, Guthrie and mission. In 2010, he retired from active ministry.
Father Hanrahan is predeceased by his parents, brothers, John T., James, and Father Michael Hanrahan and sister, Mary Hanrahan.
He is survived by sisters, Eleanor Hanrahan, New York, Ann Reidy, Ireland and Theresa Solon, Ireland, many nieces and nephews residing in the USA and in Ireland. His gentle kindness and wit will be missed by his family, parishioners and friends.
A Vigil for Father Hanrahan will be held at 6:00 p.m. on March 29, 2016 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 3214 N. Lake, Oklahoma City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on March 30 at the Cathedral, with interment next to his brother Father Michael, following at Saint Mary Cemetery, Ardmore.
