Richard Kevin Payne, 67, of Edmond, died June 7, 2016 from a long chronic illness after a rich and active life filled with loving family, great friends and an array of adoring pets. Richard was born in Newton, Kansas on September 20, 1948, to Delbert and Margaret Payne. Richard attended St. Philip Neri School in Midwest City, Mount St. Mary High School in Oklahoma City, and The University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. After serving in the US Navy, Richard returned to OKC to start his lifelong career in Oklahoma's storied energy industry. He married, Barbara Olson, an Oklahoma State University graduate and Registered Dietician. Richard retired from OG&E in 2013 and continued to be very active in running, cycling, tennis and golf, all of which he did with many close friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, numerous aunts and uncles, and his sister, Patricia Kimbrough, who passed away in 2014. Richard is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara; three brothers: Gerald Payne and wife Harriet of Boerne, Texas; James Payne and wife Marilyn, of Denton, Texas; and Paul Payne and wife JoLeigh of Franklin, Tennessee; his brother-in-law Bruce Kimbrough of Jones, Oklahoma; Barbara's three sisters, Judie Larsen and husband Matt, Jane Carter husband, Glenn and Kaye Duncan and her husband Dan, and many nieces and nephews.
An evening prayer service will be conducted at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 900 S Littler Ave, Edmond, with interment following at Memorial Park Cemetery at 13313 N Kelley Ave, Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital Research Foundation.
Finally, the family expresses sincere gratitude to the team at Oklahoma Heart Hospital, including his physician team, Dr, Ronald White, Dr Mark Fixley and Dr. Wayne Wasemiller, as well as the exceptional nurses, Lisa, Melissa, Kimberly, Tiffany, Deron, Jessica and Shelly. Barbara would also like to thank her good friend, Ginger Ogle, for her compassion and support.
