Richard W. Welch, MD passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011 in Oklahoma City surrounded by family and friends. Dr. Welch was born in Beloit, WI to Richard and Doris Welch. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the University of Illinois, Chicago and he was a prestigious James Scholar recipient allowing him to simultaneously earn his MD and PHD while attending the U of I. As the last drafted physician during the Vietnam War, he reached the rank of Major before leaving the Army. He then spent 10 years in academic medicine at the University of Texas San Antonio, before entering private practice. Dr. Welch was a devoted and gifted physician earning a countless number of professional awards and distinctions. He was one of the founders of Digestive Disease Specialists at Integris Baptist Medical Center, and dedicated his life to patient care. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and loved nothing more than enjoying a relaxing Sunday afternoon with his family and beloved Jack Russell terriers......He is survived by his wife JoAnn of 26 years; his children Ron Natale, Rick and Nancy Natale, Erika and Kent Wyatt; 7 grandchildren; a very special family friend Brenda Miller, and a myriad of loving friends and family, especially Jim and Mary Tilford. Preceeded in death by his parents Richard and Doris Welch of Flushing, MI. The family would like to thank the nurses and palliative care team on 4C-D at Mercy Hospital for their compassion and outstanding care.
