Shirley Anne Roy passed away, Saturday evening, February 11th, 2017 at her home in Edmond surrounded by her children. She was born July 27, 1946, in Fort Smith, AR, the daughter of Charles and Patricia Keating Sanford. She grew up in Fort Smith where she graduated from St. Ann's Academy. Shirley then moved to Oklahoma City where she received her nurses training from the Sisters of Mercy. Shirley worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Mercy Hospital for many years while attending OU and earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in nursing and became an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Shirley served in private practice in Edmond for several years prior to moving to her lake home in Sulphur where she has spent the last 15 years serving multiple communities as a traveling nurse. While in the Oklahoma City area, she was an integral member of St. Eugene Catholic Church. In Sulphur, she became an active parishioner at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Even though Shirley graduated from OU, she was an avid OSU fan. She loved "digging in the dirt". Her favorite was tending to her roses. She also enjoyed crocheting, playing bridge and poker, and visiting the casinos. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jean Francis Roy in 1987; her parents; and three brothers, Larry, James, and John. She is survived by five children, Angela Rau (Jack), Steve Roy (Kathy), Christy Bassett (Chaz), Edward Roy (Athena), and Tim Roy (Lori); six siblings, Liz Kreiger, Barbara Conrad (John), Mary Pat Sanford, Joseph Sanford (Kathy), Teresa Phillips (Steve) and Charlotte Sharp (Larry); 11 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Visitation will be from 5pm –6pm, followed by a Rosary service from 6pm – 7pm at Smith & Kernke N. May Chapel, Friday, February 17th. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am, Saturday, February 18th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1313 E. 7th Street, Sulphur, OK; burial immediately following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Ardmore, Ok. In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested that donations in kind may be made to: Saint Gregory's Abbey, 1900 N. MacArthur, Shawnee, OK 74801 or to Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sulphur.
