Sister Mary Clotilda Toelle

Leona Lucille Marie was born to George Toelle of O'Fallon, MO and to Ursula Orf Toelle of Dardenne Prairie, MO. In this loving family of eight children, Sister was the fourth daughter. She happily related that she was baptized the next day. Sister moved when she was 4 years of age to Sulphur, OK and then moved to the rural community of Canute, OK. At a young age, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on August 15, 1928 and made her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1934. Sister enjoyed her early education at Mt. Saint Mary's High School, Oklahoma City, OK. There she enjoyed the students, the community life of the Sisters, and always participated in celebrations, prayer and noted events. She was studious and obtained her Teacher's Certificate in Oklahoma and a B.A. in History at Mt. St. Scholastica, Atchison, KS, and a M.A. in Social Studies at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. Her multiple missions of OKC included St. Joseph, John Carroll, St. Francis, Sacred Heart, Mt. Saint Mary's, and McGuinness. Other missions included St. Joseph's, Elk City, OK, St. Mary's, Konawa, OK, St. Agnes, Ardmore, OK, St. Benedict's, Shawnee, OK, Trinity High, Hutchison, KS, and St. Joseph's, Slaton, TX. Her joy-filled spirit embraced so many students throughout her career. Many parents and students followed Sister throughout her lifetime and to her last days. Sister enjoyed playing challenging games and putting together multiple complex jigsaw puzzles. Her life was devoted to prayer and dedication as a joyful Sister of Mercy. Sister will be remembered as a good, religious, hard working teacher, and friend of the poor. Sister was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Urilla Schachle, Helen Cunha, Regine Ricciotti, Virginia Toelle, Genevieve Barrett and brothers Charles Toelle and Eugene Toelle. Her survivors include many beloved nieces, nephews, and their children, Mercy physicians, co-workers/caretakers, Mercy Associates and Religious Sisters of Mercy.
