Sister Joan Teresa Korhuniak died at St. Ann's Home, Oklahoma City, January 4, 2012. Born Helen Eulogia July 12, 1921 to John and Sophia Alczynski Korhuniak near Harrah, Oklahoma, she entered the convent of the Carmelite Sisters of St. Therese September 8, 1936. Sister Joan made her first vows March 26, 1938. For forty years she was a gifted teacher of pre-school, kindergarten and primary grades in Catholic schools in Fairfax, Union City, Bristow, Yukon, Sand Springs and St. Charles in Oklahoma City as well as Villa Teresa Schools in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Moore. Sister Joan's talents also allowed her experience in housekeeping, maintenance and food service at Villa Teresa and St. Ann's Home. In November 2004 Sister Joan became a resident of St. Ann's Nursing Home, "the best place she had ever been." Thanks to all at St. Ann's who made her last years so richly blessed. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Chyz, and her brothers Joseph, Stanley, William and John. Sister Joan is survived by her brothers Michael, Louis and Anthony. Wake Service is at 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 6 at Villa Teresa Convent, 1300 Classen Drive. Mass of Christian Burial is at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 7 at St. Ann's Nursing Home Chapel.
