Maria Guadalupe Herrera, age 77, was born to Cecilio M. Herrera and Maria Rebeca (Ferrara) Herrera in Laredo, Texas on December 22, 1943. Her siblings included her three brothers: Bro. Joseph Eugene, Bro. Cecilio Jose and Alberto Jose; two sisters, Maria Rebeca and Maria de Los Angeles (Angie). Sister experienced her elementary education and high school at Ursuline Academy, Laredo, TX. Following her high school graduation, Sister furthered her education as a studious and capable student. She received a B.A. at Webster University, St. Louis, MO; a M.A.T. at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, TX; and M.B.A. at The Graduate Theological Foundation, Plymouth, IN; also, Certification from USCCB Hispanic Pastoral Ministry and MACC, San Antonio, TX.Sister Guadalupe entered the Sisters of Mercy at Frontenac, MO on September 8, 1961 and made her profession of religious final vows on August 16, 1969. In 1966 she began her teaching career at Sacred Heart High School, Biloxi, MS. She also taught at Mercy High School, St. Louis, MO, Mount St. Mary Academy, Little Rock, AR, and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mission, TX. Sister was later missioned to Pastoral Care at Mercy Hospital, Laredo, TX and St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, Fort Smith, AR. She provided a needed and compassionate service for Cuban Patient Affairs as a liaison between Ft. Chaffee, AR and Pastoral Ministry/Nursing Staff at St. Edwards Mercy Medical Center Fort Smith, AR. Sister offered Diocesan support to staff as Director of Religious Education to Texas Dioceses of Amarillo, Beaumont, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, and Laredo. She passed away June 5, 2020, at Sisters of Mercy Convent in Oklahoma City, OK.Following her retirement in 2014 at Mercy Convent, Oklahoma City, Sister Guadalupe was prayerful and faithfully inquired about the care of others. Throughout her life Sister was humble, kind and worked tirelessly to help others. As her health declined, she continued to love and be loved by her family, community members and co-workers. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Dr. Alberto Jose Herrera; sisters Maria Rebecca Mutz and Maria de Los Angeles Herrera. Sister's immediate survivors include brothers Bro. Cecilio Jose Herrera, FMS and Bro. Joseph Eugene Herrera, FMS; her loved niece Rebeca Mutz; and other beloved relatives, Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates, co-workers, friends, compassionate physicians and caregivers.Memorials may be extended to Mercy Ministries of Laredo c/o Sisters of Mercy, 2905 Monterrey, Laredo, TX 78046-6648.Christian burial will be at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery 10:00 am, on June 8, 2020. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a future date.
