Vernon Eugene Kouts

Loving husband and father Vernon Eugene Kouts was born on November 5, 1927 in Enid, OK to George and Caroline Kouts and passed away on January 13, 2015 in Oklahoma City. Vernon grew up on a farm in Enid. He graduated from Garber High School where he played football. Following High School, Vernon joined the Army Paratroopers, the 82nd Airborne. He married Winona Mae Schultz in 1953. They settled in Muskogee, OK where they raised three children; Daryl, Sue, and David. Vernon attended Tulsa University and graduated with a degree in agricultural journalism from Oklahoma A&M (OSU). He worked for Muskogee Daily Phoenix as their Farm Editor until 1965. He then worked in the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture in Oklahoma City for a few years before joining the Association of Electric Cooperatives as Editor of Oklahoma Rural News. He retired in 1989. After retirement Vernon enjoyed photography, metal detecting, golfing, and spending time with his church's Men's Bible Study. He donated his time to worthwhile causes in the community, such as, Meals on Wheels. Highlights in his life were traveling with Winona, attending OSU games, and visiting his six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alvin Kouts; a son, David Wayne Kouts. He is survived by his wife, Winona, a son, Daryl A. Kouts and daughter, Sue N. Frost. Visitation will be Sunday, January 18, 2015, from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Kernke North May. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 19,, 2015 at Messiah Lutheran Church, followed by interment at Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid. In lieu of flowers expressions of gratitude may be made to the charity of your choice.
