Virginia June Ditmars

Virginia June Smith Ditmars passed from this life on June 16, 2012 in OKC. She was born on October 6, 1926 in Casper, Wyoming to C.J. and Emogene Smith. The family moved to Tulsa in 1929. After graduating from Tulsa Will Rogers High School, she attended Oklahoma A & M College. While in college, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She served as President of Chi Omega, the Panhellenic Council and The Association of Women Students. She was also a member of Mortar Board Honor Society. During her senior year she met fellow student, John J. (Jim) Ditmars. They fell in love and they were married following graduation in 1948. They eventually moved to OKC to start a family which included 3 children, Diane, Jim and Rick. Her life was filled with volunteering. She was a braillist and a books on tape reader at the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She also served as a classroom volunteer for visually impaired children. June had a deep love for music, especially the piano. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Music Club, active in the Pianist Division. She spent a decade during the 50's and 60's as the organist at St. Patrick Catholic Church. In her later years, she was a proud member of Christ the King Catholic Church Bell Choir. She was a member of the Colonel John Starks, Sr. Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. June is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and John Culbertson of Edmond, son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John J. Jr. and Cathy Christensen Ditmars of OKC, and son and daughter-in-law, Richard C. and Barbara Ditmars of Boulder, Colorado; one beloved Grandson, John J. Ditmars, III; three beloved step-grandchildren, Ashley Culbertson, Dr. Blake Christensen and Adam Christensen; and many loved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Jim Ditmars; and her brother, Jack Smith. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church in OKC. Interment will follow at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
