Walter Eugene Herring

W. Eugene Herring of Oklahoma City was born in Glazier, TX on November 19, 1925 to Walter and Loretta Herring. Gene was the youngest of 6 children and lived to be the oldest. He passed away quietly on February 12, 2012 at home, in the loving arms of his family. He is survived by his wife of 62 blissful years, Peggy Herring; his 3 children Jean Anne Jacobson of Bradenton, FL, Bryce Herring of OKC, and Scott Herring of Redondo Beach, CA; Jean's husband George; Scott's wife Kathryn; and his 2 grandchildren Slater and Carissa Herring of Redondo Beach. After graduating from Higgins High School in Texas, he assisted his father on a ranch in Canadian, TX until he entered the U.S. Army in 1945, serving in the South Pacific. Upon return from the Army, he attended Oklahoma A&M, graduating in 1950. While attending school, he met and married his beloved Peggy in 1949. Gene's electrical engineering career started at Public Service Co. of Oklahoma, then moved on to the Corps of Engineers in Tulsa and later L.B. Perkins Company in OKC. After 8 years, Choc Perkins suggested that Gene and his dear friend Jack Danner start a new firm and take over for him. In 1961 they formed Herring & Danner, building a highly respected company. After 30 years, they merged with Zumwalt & Ragsdale, forming ZRHD. In 1996, Gene retired from ZRHD, but he just couldn't put the pencil down and continued working on projects until January. Gene was active in community service with Rotary International for many years, as well as his church, serving as an usher. When he wasn't helping others, he was a devoted family man, recreational golfer and proud OSU Cowboy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Chapel Hill United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice, in the name of W. Eugene Herring.
