Walter Frederick Carter, age 96, passed away peacefully on May 27th, 2016 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Walter was born on March 23rd, 1920 in North Easton, Massachusetts to Helena Elizabeth (Murphy) Carter and George Alfred Carter. He was a decorated WWII veteran, serving in the 86th Infantry Division of the United States Army. He met Margaret Louise Austin at a USO dance in San Angelo, Texas, and they were married on October 19th, 1946. After the war, Walter attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Bachelors in Business Administration. He was employed in Personnel Management at the Indian Health Service from 1950 until his retirement in 1986. Walter was a devoted father and grandfather, and a dedicated member of his community. He enjoyed volunteering for various organizations, ranging from youth sports leagues to the Will Rogers Airport. His passions included literature, history, and sports, and he was known to be a highly competitive bridge and bingo player. He was a longtime member of St. Eugene's Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. Walter was preceded in death by his wife Louise and his beloved granddaughter Meredith. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Carter Litsey and Rick Litsey; his son Donovan Frederick Carter; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held at Smith and Kernke Funeral Home on Thursday June 2nd, 2016 from 9am to 8pm. A funeral mass will be said at St. Eugene's Catholic Church on June 3rd, 2016 at 11:00am, with a burial following at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
