Wilma Barrios Mcneill

As a resident of the Village for over 60 years, Wilma was one of two remaining original residents of the Village. Wilma passed away at her home on July 19, 2014. She was born and grew up in Opelousas, LA, the daughter of Wilson Joseph Barrios and Cora Juliet Morvant Barrios. After high school, while working as a civilian secretary at Camp Claiborne, LA, Wilma met her future husband, David L. McNeill. The couple married June 3, 1943. After David was honorably discharged, they spent two years in Kokomo, IN, where both of her sons were born. The family returned to Louisiana and lived in New Orleans prior to moving to Oklahoma City in late 1949. Wilma was a stay-at-home mom until David passed away in 1972. In 1973 she began an 18 year career as secretary in the Safety & Security Department at Baptist Hospital (now Integris). Wilma loved working at Baptist and never missed a day of work due to illness. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and of the retiree's organization at Baptist. Wilma loved travel. She, and her many friends, have been all over the world. Wilma enjoyed attending community activities. She was a long time season ticket holder for the theater and philharmonic and for over 40 years she was a season ticket holder for OSU football. To her many friends and family Wilma was well known as a great companion, for her loyal and caring support and her positive attitude. She will be greatly missed for all her caring acts of kindness and support and for her gracious personal style. Wilma liked nothing better than spending time with family. She is survived by two sons, David (Karen) of Oklahoma City and Dennis (Robin) of New York; brother, Pierre Victor Barrios (Mildred) of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren: Jarret McNeill (Allison), Ginger Dietzmann (Joe), Corey Perles (Zach), and Ryan McNeill (Mary); five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Lt. Col. Willie Wilson Joseph Barrios. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 10100 Ridgeview Dr., Oklahoma City, OK 73120, or to a charity of your choice.
